Son of mauritian fisherman who has grown up in Poudre d’Or village on the North-East coast of the island, Patrick Karia is a sea passionate who knows all the best spots of the small islands of the coast, which are nestled in the Indian Ocean and surrounding Mauritius.
Several years ago, he set up his small family business which offers excursions to the region’s lagoon thanks to a growing demand from tourists wishing to have an authentic boat experience.
The Grand Bleu Excursion offers boat trips to the island of Bernache and Amber island, these two small paradise islands in the north-east lagoon of Mauritius. The meeting point is a the pier in the village of Poudre d’Or. Appointment is at 9 o’clock, you will embark aboard a large motorised ‘pirogue’, equipped to accomodate about 10 people, and the tour begins with a walk through the lagoon with a postcard landscape that leaves no one indifferent.
A small stop will be proposed for a swim and snorkelling to admire the coral of the lagoon before docking at Bernache island, surrounded by its beautiful white sandy beach and its emerald lagoon. As you walk around the island, Patrick and his team are busy preparing lunch and setting up the table. An excellent homemade punch will be served followed by a meal consisting of a grilled fish or chicken, sausages, salads and desert as well as a variety of beverages such as beer, soda and juice. After the picnic, you will enjoy a relaxing moment under the shade of filao trees or a last swim in the sea.
Then it’s off to Amber island, surrounded by its beautiful mangrove, this fascinating plant that surrounds the island and plays a vital role in the marine eco-system. You will go down on the island to explore the endemic forest along the trail and discover an old volcanic crater and the ruins of a building dating back to 1750. The boat trip back to the pier of Poudre d’Or is around 4pm.
