Pamplemousses district is one of the oldest in the island. This is where the governor Labourdonnais built his house, where Pierre Poivre created the garden in the 18th century, where Bernardin de Saint-Pierre immortalised Paul and Virginie.The Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden is undoubtedly the most visited site in Mauritius.

The main gate of the garden is a masterpiece of metalwork made in 1862 and the Chateau de Mon Plaisir was the former colonial residence of the Governor Mahé de Labourdonnais. Gathering trees, exotic plants and flowers from India, Malaysia, Philippines, Polynesia, China, Africa,Central America and endemic species of the Indian Ocean ( Madagascar , Reunion, Mauritius ,Rodrigues ),the Pamplemousses Garden has a rich botanical collection in the heart of 25 hectares of lush vegetation.Its trees and buildings reflect the history of Mauritius.
